Call of the Abbys

Research project

The project was initiated in 1997, clearly formulated in 2000 and reorganized in 2003. The natural dream of all “vertical” cavers - the discovery and study of the first in the world natural cave with depth of more than 2,000 meters, was adopted as the main objective of the project and was to implement during specified period (expected - before 2005).

That realization of the project is based on a scientific approach to the selection of areas and exploration methods in the caves, as well as the systematic nature of the comprehensive training effort, preparation of material resources for expeditions, exploration of selected areas and caves. Areas, which are studied as the part of the project, are Arabica (Western Caucasus, Abkhazia) and Aladaglar (Eastern Taurus, Turkey) massifs. The project is put into practice by the UkrSA in collaboration with other organizations. A.Klimchuk, Yu.Kasyan and N.Solovev are project coordinators.

In the year 2004 three expeditions have been prepared and conducted as the part of the "Call of the Abyss" project:

  • The expedition to the Aladaglar Massif, Turkey during 4-28 July was carried out by composite UkrSA team of 25 participants from Ukraine, Turkey, Russia, Britain, instructors A.Klimchuk and Y.Kasyan. The main goal of the expedition was continuation of the study of the Kuzgun Cave.
  • The expedition to the Arabica Massif during 1-30 August was conducted by composite UkrSA team with about 50 participants from Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, Abkhazia, Spain, France, instructor N.Soloviev. The main goal of the expedition was the continuation of the study of the Krubera-Voronya Cave and other caves in the Ortobalagan Valley.
  • The expedition to the Arabica Massif, beginning in mid-September was carried out by composite UkrSA team with 9 members and instructor Y.Kasyan, the main goal - the continuation of the study of the Krubera-Voronya Cave with consideration of results from August expedition.

On request of A.B.Klimchuk, "Call of the Abyss" project received a grant from the U.S. National Geographic Society and the National Geographic Magazine in 2004. Grant funds ($ 35,000) are aimed primarily for the purchase of equipment, which amounted to "UkrSA Expedition Fund." This fund will be used for future expedition of the "Call of the Abyss", as well as other UrkSA expeditions and training.

Equipment center "Traverse" and "Cavex-Club" (Kiev), a company "Motor-Sich" (Zaporozhye), Meander (Slovakia), Leica Geosystems (Switzerland), "Megacom" (Kharkov) provided assistance in equipping and organizing expeditions of the project in the 2004. In Turkey National Geological Service conducted different kinds of support. Support in Abkhazia and transportation was conducted by Vatika Vardanyan (Gantiadi). Organizational support for the expedition to Arabica assisted Abkhazia government agencies and Vladimir Kakalia. We sincerely thank all cavers, who supported us organizationally and morally during challenging preparation and conduction of these expeditions, who sincerely rejoiced results, not only in caving.

A.Klimchuk, Y.Kasyan and N.Soloviev are the coordinators of the "Call of the Abyss" project.
