    Cave-Spring "Uzundzha"


    Northwestern slopes of Ai-Petri Massif, Ukraine, Crimea

    Basic characteristics:

    Length 2650 m, amplitude +25 m, square 1500 m2, volume 4500 m3, the entrance is situated 525 m above the sea level, category 3А.


    The entrance is at the left side of the gorge of Uzundzha River, 3 m higher the karst spring outcrop. The cave is a system of narrow (0.3-0.5 m) interstitial passages that connected by rounded siphon canals on different levels.

    The cave located in heavy-bedded and thin-bedded limestone with interlayers of sandstone up to 20 cm, divided into blocks by several parallel faults. Then the water is low there are several flooded areas in the cave connected with each other and the spring Suuksu by siphons. Then the water is high the level of water in the cave rises by 1.5-2.5 m. There are water mechanical and various water beds of precipitation in the cave.

    The nearest part of the cave is known since the beginning of XX century. In 1963-1966 the cave was investigated by Sevastopol speleologists. In 1967 the cave was investigated by Crimean karst expedition of Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.

  • Goals and objectives:

    • The study of one of the main karts system of Ai-Petri Massif. Cave-Spring "Uzundzha" is one of the biggest unloading of this karts system.
    • Determination and more accurate definition of assumed indexes of this karts system, using the method of ponor tracing of "Beshtekne" barren upland.
    • Increasing of basic indexes of the cave.
    • Continue of works on searching the roundabout ways of the siphon С2.
    • Passage siphons С1 and С2.
    • Determination of water movement direction in the cave system and hydrological role of siphons С1 and С2.
    • Topographic mapping of all missing parts of the cave, as well as detailing of the existing survey.
    • Researches on determining the water balance and regimen of "Suuk-Su" spring.
  • Expected results of the project

    • Further passage of different parts of the cave and exit to the main large block of the massif.
    • Exit to the probable parallel water-bearing systems of the cave around siphons С1 and С2.
    • Passage of siphons С1 and С2.
  • Previous achieved results

    • In the middle part of the cave there was found a meander. The air draught and water noise are strong in this meander. Hypothetically this meander is connected with parallel water-bearing system feeding siphons С1 and С2. 7 meters of this meander were passed.
    • Dive into С2 was made. Depth reached –7 m. Length – 100 m.
