Commission of Archaeology and Palaeontology of Caves

During all times, the karst cavities were concentrators of paleontological and archaeological sites. Horizontal caves were dwellings for ancient people and dens for predators, and vertical pits worked as traps for terrestrial animals.

At the same time, remains of animals were preserved underground much better than on the surface.

The main objectives of the Commission are to collect information about the presence of archaeological and paleontological cave sites and to promote their conservation and scientific research.

During recent years, thanks to attention and enthusiasm of cavers from Dnipropetrovs’k, Kyiv, Sevastopol, Simferopol, Ternopil, Uzhhorod, Chernivtsi, Yalta, and others, famous paleontological discoveries in the caves of the Caucasus (Alek), Crimea (Karabi, Dolhorukovska, Chatyrdag, Yalta, Ai-Petri Yailas), Bukovina and Podill (Bukovynka, Ozerna, Crystal Caves), Carpathian (Uholka Massif), and also archaeological findings (Bucovinian Podnistrovia) were made.

We’ll report on our page about the most attractive findings.
