UkrSA organizational basis

Membership

In contrast to the usual “pyramidal” structures with many intermediate bodies between the individual and the national organization, UkrSA was projected extremely simple and democratic organization. The individual membership was the basis of UkrSA.

Individual members directly participate in the election of UkrSA governing body, participate in UkrSA conferences without any quotas and have the right to any initiatives.

UkrSA was created as the organization that membership is opened for speleologists from other countries.

This was particularly important for speleologists from former Soviet Union where UkrSA was the only uniting organization that provided people with information, communication and collaboration opportunities for a long time (until 1996). Speleologists from other countries became members of UkrSA if they had close contact with Ukrainian speleology and expressed their support by individual membership. During 10 years, speleologists from Russia, Moldova, Byelorussia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Israel, Germany, Switzerland, France, Spain, England, USA and Argentina were UkrSA members.

Almost a thousand people were USA members during 10 years. Some of them kept the continuous membership for the whole period, others for some years and others left the organization after one year of membership. The maximum number of simultaneous active members was in 1993 (460 people). The significant reduction of membership in 1996 was associated with the number of reasons. The main reasons were the complete cessation of subsidies by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the significant increasing of membership fee, and the termination of Russian speleologists’ membership who have created RSU by that time. It became clear that the number of people in Ukraine who are high and stable motivated in speleology, and who are ready to pay for the maintaining of their organization varies from 150 to 200 people.

UkrSA governing bodies

The highest governing body of UkrSA is the Conference (which takes place every two years). Presidium of UkrSA takes place in the intervals between the Conferences. Presidium is elected for two years by universal suffrage of the Association members. The voting system organized in such a way that every election there is a partial but not a radical change of the Presidium members. The executive committee accomplishes the operational management of current activities. The executive committee is elected among the members of the Presidium. The president and vice presidents are elected by the Presidium. During 10 years (five terms of office), 23 people were within the Presidium of UkrSA.

Membership of UkrSA Presidium in different years (appointments: P - the Prezident, VP - Vice-president, ME - the Member of Executive Committeeа, MP - the Member of Presidium):

Congresses of Ukrainian Speleological Association

Holding of congresses is one of the main functions of the Association. Congresses are and will be the most important mechanism of cavers' communication and their integration into a common organization. Communication means many things: direct exchange of information and results of activities, getting acquaintance with each other, development of new plans, official bodies' work, birth and development of traditions and trends, competitions on ropes and traditional football and finally, - just a "party" with nice friends and associates. UkrSA congresses unite from 100 to 200 people and everyone finds something to one's liking.

UkrSA PUBLICATIONS AND INFORMATION ACTIVITIES

This activity has a great value, as far as it provides speleologists with different information and methodical materials, supports and develops relations and contacts, and finally it is significant for successful many-sided functioning of the organization.

3 times a year Association publishes UkrSA bulletin, which contains information about current activities, organizational matters, methodical and reference materials, speleological news, etc. UkrSA bulletin distributed among all members of UkrSA. During 10 years there were issued 30 fascicles of "UkrSA bulletin". A. Klimchuk was the editor of the bulletin from 1992 to 1998 (1-20 numbers). B. International speleological magazine "The Light"

International speleological magazine "The Light" was founded in 1991 by A. Klimchuk as the Bulletin of Kiev center of speleology and karstology. It took a great part in maintaining the relations between speleologists of former USSR in critical years after the USSR disintegration and in the development of speleology in the new era. Since 1996 (№14) the Bulletin was reorganized into the international magazine of CIS. Now it is one of UkrSA projects. There were published 22 numbers of the magazine. A. Klimchuk was the main editor and sponsor of "The Light" from 1991 to 1998 (1-17 numbers). B. Ridush is the editor of "The Light" since 1998 (18 and more numbers). SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY

Many scientists-karstologists and speleologists are among UkrSA members. They carry out researches on such subjects as karst geomorphology and hydrogeology, the origin of caves, sediments and minerals of caves, microclimate, animal world and archeology. For the last 10 years they have published more than 200 scientific works. Some of these papers were published in leading international journals. During this period UkrSA members successfully defended six candidates and one doctoral thesis. Some developments of Ukrainian scientists-speleologists are widely recognized in the world. Ukrainian speleological Association and caving clubs render all possible assistance to scientific research of Western Ukrainian and Crimean caves. Ukrainian scientists-speleologists were initiators, editors and active participants while publishing two international collective monographs: "Gypsum Karst of the World" (Italy, 1996) and "Speleogenesis: Evolution of karst reservoirs" (USA, 2000). The last book was awarded the Prize of UIS in 2001 as the most important scientific publication in the field of karstology and speleology. A.B. Klimchuk is the president of UIS Commission of karst hydrogeology and speleogenesis since 1994.

In September 1998, UkrSA held International symposium on artificial caves. It took place in Kiev, Odessa and Crimea. Representatives of Ukraine, Russia, France, Belgium, Czechia and Poland took part in this symposium.

In 1992 UkrSA and caving club "Barrier" held a competition of scientific works on caving. The work "Hydrothermal karst of Budaiskie Mountains" written by Yuri Dublyansky and Vadim Reutsky (Novosibirsk) took the I place. The work "Mineral forming in sulphate karst caves of Western Ukraine" written by I. Turchinov (Lvov) took the II place. Bizyukin.
